Voluntary Impact has a wide range of volunteering opportunities to help people gain experience to build their skills and CVs, while seeking a paid role. In particular, we can help match people with roles in the health, care and community sectors, such as becoming a Community Health Champion, to raise awareness of health matters and services in your community and in communities affected by health inequality.
The Community Health Champion (CHC) programme is a voluntary network of residents in West Northamptonshire who promote health and wellbeing in their communities, especially to people less likely to access health services. PURPOSE Community Health Champion volunteers are trusted members of diverse communities. They promote health services and healthy lifestyles, sharing information with their contacts and networks, on health matters, long-term health conditions, and signposting people to services, support and information. Community Health Champions have a role in health promotion, campaigns, and how to access services to help people improve their health through physical activity, weight management and stopping smoking. TASKS Share health and wellbeing information with people you know. Information is provided by the Project Coordinator, about long-term conditions such as respiratory health, cancer, diabetes and mental illness. It will also include health protection services such as screening, immunisation and health checks. Help raise awareness of health conditions, and increase engagement with health and wellbeing services Share feedback and suggestions with the Project Coordinator to help develop future health services Take part in training, as required. PERSON SPECIFICATION An ideal Community Health Champion will have or be willing to develop the skills to: • Identify existing relationships or develop new contacts in the community. This could be your local area, or people you share a culture or health condition with. • Willing to talk to people about health and wellbeing topics (all training and support will be provided) • Signpost people to health and wellbeing services and information • Feed back to the Project Coordinator, without breaching confidentiality, how your conversations are going, and important points raised by your community, to help the development of future services. • Participate in regular training necessary for the role. • DBS checks are not required for this role as it does not involve lone working or visiting private homes ABOUT VOLUNTARY IMPACT: The Community Health Champion project is delivered by Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire (VIN) and funded by West Northamptonshire Council. VIN supports the voluntary and community sector through information, knowledge and skills development, helping them to support local communities.
