Many people have a fairly sedentary working lifestyle with statistics showing that the majority of workers within the UK who work in an office environment can be sitting down for up to nine hours each day and also unsurprisingly, well over half state that they feel it is having a detrimental effect on their mental health. Exercise is an integral part of keeping healthy, along with eating the correct food and getting enough sleep.

Unfortunately, we all know that a sedentary lifestyle can have serious health consequences such as increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Therefore, finding ways in which to stay active and alert whilst performing a sedentary role is crucial for maintaining overall health and wellbeing and this is where the concept of deskercise comes into play.

Deskercises offer a convenient solution to combat any negative effects of prolonged sitting. These exercises are designed to be both simple yet effective and have the added bonus that they can be performed right at your desk space. These specially tailored exercises promote movement and aim to eradicate the negative impacts that a sedentary lifestyle can produce.

Deskercises require minimal effort and can include movements such as seated leg lifts where legs are lifted, straightened and held for several seconds before lowering feet gently back to the floor or wrist and arm stretches. For the more adventurous and who do not mind a few surprised glances from colleagues then desk push ups, chair squats, torso twists can all be incorporated into your daily routine! All the deskercises help to strengthen muscles, and maintain flexibility whilst reducing stress and tension.

Incorporating simple deskercise regimes into your day will not take much time at all and you could devote a few minutes each hour or so to stretching or performing a deskercise. Even the simplest of movements can enhance blood circulation, boost dwindling energy levels and help to alleviate the physical strain on the body which is associated with extensive periods of sitting in the same position.

Be consistent with your deskercise routine and stick with it. By deciding to incorporate them into your daily working routine, it can really help with improved general health as well as breaking the monotony of a sedentary professional lifestyle, even if you do cause a few raised eyebrows in the process!
