In today’s digital age, remote job interviews have gained popularity and are far more common than they once were. However, there are certain strategies that will help to ensure a successful interview for a remote position.
Of course, it goes without saying that you must have already familiarised yourself with the video conferencing tools that the employer has chosen to use. This may be Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other similar platform. Test your camera, microphone and internet connection in advance to avoid any technical issues and hold ups. Having sound knowledge of these basics will help you to appear professional and fully prepared. Also make sure that your computer is clean and the camera lens is smear free. I recently had an important yet thankfully informal online meeting where no one could see me on the shared screen and I was frantically pressing all manner of buttons and changing settings, (much to my embarrassment!) when someone suggested that it may be a mark on the actual lens - and it was!
The environment you choose for your interview should be quiet and well lit with no clutter which would undoubtedly cause unnecessary distractions and would look highly unprofessional. It is preferable to have a neutral background so that the interviewer can keep his focus fully on interviewing you for the job.
Despite being in the relaxed surroundings and comfort of your own home, dress appropriately as if you were attending an in person interview. Not only does this give the interviewer a positive and professional overall impression of you but it also helps to get you into the correct mindset for a professional dialogue which in turn boosts your confidence and your performance.
As with any job interview, you must research the company extensively. You must familiarise yourself with their mission, values, culture and the specifics of the role that you are applying for. Prepare your answers to commonly asked interview questions as well as researching potential trickier questions and have your answers well rehearsed ahead of the interview. Also be ready to discuss with clarity how your skills and experiences align with the requirements of the role.
Importantly, emphasise your ability to work remotely and how you may deal with potential challenges, giving examples if possible. Highlight your proficiency with remote work and as well as having good knowledge of the digital tools, emphasise also the skills which are critical for remote work success such as self discipline, time management and excellent communication.
As the interview starts, aim to build a connection with your interviewer by offering a sincere greeting and a smile. Maintain eye contact by looking at the camera and not the screen and be aware of your body language throughout the interview which should convey enthusiasm and positivity.
In order to have a successful remote job interview you must master the technology, create a professional environment, dress to impress, prepare what you will say, highlight your attributes and engage effectively!
