The city of Peterborough is located in the east of England and the biggest city in this area. Situated in the county of Cambridgeshire, it is approximately seventy five miles north of London so is very well connected by road networks with the A1(M) and A47 running through the area. A typical train journey takes around an hour and the nearest airports to Peterborough are London Luton Airport and London Stansted Airport.
Beginning as a small settlement, Peterborough was, by the Middle Ages, a market town with its main industry being wool. By the eighteenth century, despite having become a city, it was in fact, the smallest city in England at the time. However, the nineteenth century brought the Industrial Revolution and the railway to Peterborough around 1845 and an increase in population. New industries were appearing such as engineering, iron, elastic webbing and especially brick making and the city was the UK’s leading brick maker for much of the following century.
Peterborough, which is proud of its multicultural and diverse community of residents is now one of the fastest growing cities within the UK with over one hundred and forty different languages spoken, the economy now tells a very different story.
The largest sectors in the city are advanced engineering and manufacturing, construction, agri tech, food and drink, digital, IT and creative, logistics, energy and environment and financial services. Several large and well known companies have recently been attracted to the city and investments are high due to the resilience and unwavering economic confidence that is apparent in this innovative and fast growing city.

With lots to see and do in the city, a few of the most popular include a visit to the historic and beautifully architectured Peterborough Cathedral whose site has been a source of worship for 1350 years! Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery has some very compelling collections on show whilst in the village of Helpston you can become inspired by visiting the former cottage and spectacular gardens of the widely acclaimed poet, John Clare. The city is home to many parks and green spaces which include Ferry Meadows Country Park and Nene Park with a network of cycle routes and footpaths which connect many of the outdoor spaces. For shoppers, there are several retail parks in Peterborough as well as the Queensgate Shopping Centre in the heart of the city. A number of theatres in Peterborough offer some fantastic shows and there are a host of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from.
The city has a relatively lower cost of living compared to many other areas in the UK and there’s a really good balance between urbanised amenities and a relaxed and peaceful lifestyle, with plenty of opportunity here for career advancement.
