Moving Away For University? How To Make It Feel Like Home!

It can be quite daunting when you are about to move into your own place after living at home for so long. It is a big step towards being independent but of course you will miss your home comforts, which is a natural emotion to feel. However, this is the start of a brand new adventure and although it may not seem like it now, the time will fly by until graduation, so you should embrace this exciting chapter of your life while you can.

Whether you are moving into a shared house or going to live in university accommodation, you will be having your own space, and maybe for the first time if you have had to share a bedroom at home. You will look back on this time of your life with fondness and many memories will be made here, so it's imperative to get it right.

With a little forward thinking and planning ahead with regards to your room, you can make it into a welcoming and comfortable space where you can relax, entertain and study.

Most rooms will be clean and basic, painted white, with usually a bed, a chest of drawers, a wardrobe and maybe a desk.. If you are lucky you may even have your own en suite bathroom or at least a sink. The more basic the better as this gives you a blank canvas in which to personalise the room and to put your individual stamp on it. Nothing has to be expensive and it can be quite fun shopping on a budget when you know it is all for you and the beginning of your future as a student.

Invest some thought with regards to your bedding as it needs to be comfortable, easily washable and able to be put in the tumble dryer. Your favourite colour can really add some vibrancy or tranquility - depending on your style - to your room and even better if you can add accessories such as a few cushions and a throw. Colour coordinating with the curtains or blinds will ensure there is not a mismatched feel to the room. A rug next to the bed can also add cosiness and warmth.

A few carefully chosen ornaments, plants and scented candles will really add sophistication to the room. If you are not good with houseplants then there are so many choices of artificial plants available which can appear extremely lifelike and never wither!

One of the most important things to consider when you move is that it is perfectly normal to feel homesick, especially if you are moving quite far away from home to university. Framed pictures and photograph frames with images of fun times that you have had, friends, family and of course, beloved pets can all help to reassure you that you are still connected.

Your personal space is important but this is just one aspect of your university experience. You will be busy studying, meeting new people and discovering new leisure pursuits as well as becoming familiar with the area to which you have moved. But at the end of each day, you can return to a home away from home!
