You have probably heard the expression ‘let the hard work speak for itself’ well, that is great and all but what if you knew of a few other things that you could be implementing today that would help you towards a bigger goal, like a promotion tomorrow? That would make a little bit of a difference, right?
Well, there is nothing wrong with waiting for your hard work to be recognised but we all have the same time at work and if you could get promoted in a shorter period by simply doing a few things differently... Would you?
Here is a list of things we suggest you should be going to get noticed and hopefully get that promotion you’ve been waiting for:
This is something that you’ll be surprised that no one asks when they are in a situation where they can sit down with their employers and speak to them. So, when you are next sitting down with your boss, doing the best job that you think you could be doing right now and don’t know which direction to turn, then ask them what you could be doing. It shows that you want to progress and be a better employee.
If you want to move more into management roles, then you need to be good with communication, you've got to show responsibility for the people that are working underneath you. This comes with a lot of different personalities and types of people, so you can always invest in short courses, online courses or even ask your employer how best to go about this especially if you feel as though this is an area that may need improving for you to get a promotion.
You don't have to be at the forefront of the conversation but there is a lot of things that you can be doing behind the scenes to bring value. Are you making your co-workers and your bosses life easier? Did you find a better way to organise a rota for someone that wasn't required of you? By bringing valve and not being asked to do so you are showing the potential that you have and the self-discipline and intuition to go ahead with good ideas and produce results.
These are rather subtle things that you can be doing to show your superiors that you'd be a good fit when a promotion comes up. Of course, time and patience does play a part in this, you cannot wish for a job to become free so you can take it. You can only put yourself in the best position possible when the opportunity comes.
