If you are one of the estimated 68% of people who use a car to get to and from your place of work then you may be wondering how to make your journey more eco-friendly. Statistics show that around three quarters of over 18’s who reside in the UK have made some changes to their way of life which takes into consideration the environment. One of the main ways that we can help tackle the plight of the environment is to try and find a more eco-friendly way of getting to work and back again. Yes, some people have decided to walk, cycle or use public transport to work but what about those of us who rely on driving to work for various reasons? Are there strategies that can be incorporated so we feel that we are doing ‘our bit’ to help? The answer is yes so here are several tips that will both ease your conscience and help the planet!
As the weather becomes colder and the evenings darker, many people prefer to use their cars to get to and from work. However, share your car journeys where possible. Car sharing is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people are becoming environmentally aware of their own impact that they have on the environment. Using one vehicle rather than several is far more efficient. As well as saving money (as hopefully everyone will be contributing to the fuel costs!), you will also have the benefit of starting your day with like minded company and some interesting conversations can be had in addition to getting to know colleagues better.
Checking tyres is essential because if they are not pumped up to the correct pressure then the engine has to work much harder and ultimately use more fuel. Many cars have a tyre pressure warning system which notifies you when the tyres are less than efficient or there is a problem but aim to check them at least once a month if not more.
Many people are not aware that using their air conditioning system and heating in the car actually uses fuel so you should only use these when necessary. Consider wearing an extra layer of clothing in the colder weather to keep warm or open car windows where possible for ventilation and allowing fresh air to circulate in warmer weather instead of using the air conditioning.
Choosing to drive at a constant speed instead of lots of stopping and starting can prove to be more economical. Using the highest gear possible and maintaining it is also a great way to conserve your fuel.
Driving faster can potentially use up to a quarter more fuel than if you were driving at a regular speed and of course, produces more emissions which is why some roads have had their speed limits reduced.
Driving in an eco-friendly way to work can be beneficial if done properly. It reduces harmful emissions, helps to combat air pollution and mitigates the effects of climate change. Additionally, eco-friendly driving practices can save money on fuel costs. By conserving energy and resources, eco-friendly driving can contribute to a more sustainable and healthier environment.
