Your first job interview after graduating from university is a real milestone and a golden opportunity to not only showcase your skills but your knowledge and enthusiasm too! Of course, for many who have finished university and are ready to enter into the world of work, it will be a nerve wracking experience but with adequate preparation and some confidence in yourself, you can make a strong impression and set the foundation for your career.
You must prepare thoroughly for your first interview which will give you the best chance of securing the job that you are applying for, so take time to research the company’s mission, values and recent projects in order to demonstrate genuine interest. Familiarise yourself with the job description and identify how your skills align with the role. Then practice answering some of the most commonly asked interview questions. Examples are ‘Tell me about yourself’, 'What are your strengths and weaknesses?’ and ‘Why do you want to work here?’ Prepare examples of past experiences that will highlight your problem solving abilities, teamwork and adaptability. In addition to this, make sure that your CV is fully up to date, that it is tailored to the job you are being interviewed for and free of any errors. It is always a good idea to have several copies of your CV as well as other documents such as examination results.
On the day of the actual interview, dress appropriately for the company’s culture and if you feel a little unsure about what to wear then always lean towards business and professional attire. As with any interview, aim to arrive around ten to fifteen minutes early which will demonstrate punctuality and respect for the interviewer’s time as well as to catch your breath! Greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and a confident smile while maintaining eye contact to set a positive tone which hopefully lasts throughout the duration of the interview.
Listen carefully to every question that you are presented with. You are fine to pause for a few moments before answering. Convey your experiences and achievements while showing enthusiasm for the role, asking thoughtful questions about both the vacant position and the company. This will show the interviewer that you are interested but it also helps you to determine whether or not the role is what you thought it would be.
Your first interview is a learning experience and whether or not you get the job, each interview you attend thereafter will build your confidence and will bring you closer to landing your dream role. The secret is to stay positive and to use each interview opportunity, good or bad, as a form of continuous learning which is ultimately leading you towards a successful and rewarding career.
