Attending your very first career fair can invoke a mix of emotions from sheer excitement to feeling totally overwhelmed. Whether you are a recent graduate, a first time job seeker, someone who has been out of work for a while or perhaps someone who is already working but feels the need for a change of career, then having prior knowledge of what to expect can really help you make the most of the experience.

At every event hosted by The UK Careers Fair, you will discover a wide variety of companies in attendance, both local and national employers. Some may be small businesses while others will be large and well known. You can expect to see exhibiting employers from various industries and this diversity offers a great opportunity to explore different career paths and find out which companies align with your own interests. It may be the case that after chatting with several employers and learning about the opportunities and abundance of roles on offer, that you begin to think about a totally different career than the one you originally had in mind!
A great benefit of attending a careers fair is the chance to network. You will have unlimited opportunity to speak directly with those who are recruiting, ask questions and learn about what qualities they are looking for in a candidate. There is no need to hold back at these informal events so approach an employer, introduce yourself and focus on making a positive impression! It is these initial conversations that may lead to future job opportunities.
As well as conversing with you and answering any questions you may have about the company or roles, often employers may have leaflets, booklets or even give you information to look at online which can provide valuable insights into specific industries and the variety of job roles being offered. You may even be given a goody bag with an assortment of items with the company’s logo on - who doesn't need an extra pen or two!
Although you do not need to bring a CV to the event and it is certainly not obligatory, you may wish to bring along printed copies of your updated CV to give to those employers who interest you. Alternatively, you may decide that you will leave this until after you see if you wish to apply for any of the vacancies. This gives you the option of then tailoring your CV to align with the specific requirements and preferences of the company to which you are applying.

With some preparation and a positive mindset, you can make the time spent attending an event both productive and enjoyable!
