The East Midlands is a region with a rich and diverse history, shaped by its geography, industrial past and cultural evolution. Historically, the region has been a crossroads of trade and military activity due to its central location within England. The region has evidence of human settlements dating back to prehistoric times and the area was part of Celtic Britain before the Roman Conquest in the 1st century. Key Roman sites include Ratae Corieltauvorum (modern day Leicester) which became a significant town in Roman Britain and Lindum Colonia which served as a vital military trading centre.

The Anglo Saxons settled in the region after the fall of Roman Britain with notable towns such as Nottingham and Derby developing at this time. The Norman Conquest of 1066 significantly influenced the East Midlands, as it did much of England. Major castles were built, including those in Lincoln and Nottingham and the area became an important administrative and military centre under Norman rule as well as developing agricultural and textile industries.

During the Industrial Revolution, the East Midlands played a pivotal role, particularly in mining and manufacturing. Cities like Derby became prominent centres for textiles and engineering with innovations in the rail industry that made significant contributions to transportation. Nottingham was a hub for lace making and Leicester became a centre for textiles. Coal mining developed especially in places such as Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, providing essential resources to fuel Britain’s growing industries.

Regarding the economy of the East Midlands, several key factors continue to drive economic development. This diverse economic landscape is shaped by a strong industrial base, a growing technology sector and a significant investment in infrastructure.

Cities such as Deby, home to several industry leaders, are central to aerospace and automotive innovation. The ecommerce boom has further fuelled the growth of distribution and warehousing facilities across the East Midlands, offering jobs and boosting regional economic output. This sector is set to experience continued expansion as demand grows.

Cheltenham and surrounding areas are emerging as a major centre for cybersecurity with the Golden Valley Development poised to bolster the region’s technological credentials. Government initiatives and private sector investment are fuelling this sector’s growth, positioning the East Midlands as a key player in the UK’s cybersecurity landscape. Beyond cybersecurity there is also substantial growth in digital technologies such as software development, gaming and creative industries in cities like Nottingham and Leicester.

The region's construction sector remains robust, driven by infrastructure projects and new housing developments. There is particular focus on sustainable building practices and green construction as the UK transitions to a net zero carbon economy.
